The number of cases of high pathogen avian influenza in the south-east of France has risen to 30, that is double the number of cases registered at the beginning of the week.

Most new infections were discovered during the compulsory checks of ducks and other poultry that were to be transported from premises within the protection zone to slaughter houses elsewhere. An agricultural college farm in the area was also found to be infected.

The bird flu outbreak, found among chickens, is the first to be reported in France since 2007 when it had been detected in wild swans, data from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) showed. In an effort to limit the damage to the sale of poultry and poultry products such as foie gras, the departments of agriculture and of health and the service for animal health told reporters that the strains discovered at the outbreak, H5N1, H5N2 and H5N9, do not pose any risk to humans.
