A day-old chick makes a remarkable journey from Aviagen hatcheries to customers’ poultry farms around the world. What you might not be aware of is the incredible collaboration and innovation that go into its safe transport.

You see, this process isn’t just about moving chicks from point A to point B – it’s about ensuring they are healthy and comfortable every step of the way. Whether our chicks are on a farm, in a hatchery or in transit, everything we do is guided by our commitment to animal welfare and customer satisfaction.

Our latest Global Export video brings this story to life, showing how chicks travel by air and land to the farms of global poultry producers, receiving the best care every step of the way.

Committed to breeding for food security and sustainability

We understand the importance of food security for communities on every continent. That’s why we’re dedicated to delivering a steady supply of high-quality breeding chickens that farmers count on to produce nutritious, affordable, and sustainable meat for their local families.

Biosecurity is key

Biosecurity is key to protecting food safety and starts by protecting our birds from disease. We control farm access, rigorously clean and disinfect facilities, and have skilled veterinarians monitoring flock health to make sure everything is as it should be.

The process begins even before chicks hatch. Clean eggs are collected, sorted, and stored in temperature-controlled environments before being transported to our hatcheries. There, they’re incubated for 21 days before hatching.

Breeding success together

Transporting day-old chicks to over 100 countries is no small task – it’s a highly coordinated effort requiring precision and teamwork. That’s where our global export team steps in. Our mission, ‘Breeding success together’, is brought to life by the teams around the globe working hand-in-hand with airlines, airports, ground crews, and freight companies – all united by a shared commitment to the welfare of the chicks.

To navigate the complexities of international commerce, the team relies on the 3 C’s: communication, cooperation, and compliance. From synchronising flight schedules with hatch times to selecting the safest and most efficient routes, every step is thoughtfully arranged.

Collaborating with organisations like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) ensures that everyone involved is aligned and equipped to meet the unique needs of the chicks. This well-planned approach helps with their safe and comfortable transport to farms around the world.

Breeding innovation

Aviagen’s unique and sector-leading application of technology plays a vital role in maintaining optimal conditions for our chicks. Temperature loggers and 5G precision sensors continuously monitor the chicks’ environment during flights.

We’ve also embraced virtual reality tools with live streaming at key exit ports. This cutting-edge technology enables us to remotely inspect chick pallets before departure, so that everything is perfectly in order and ready for transport.

These advancements allow us to respond swiftly, upholding the welfare of the chicks and delivering on our promise to provide the best care for our birds while ensuring customer satisfaction.

“Our mission at Aviagen goes beyond delivering chicks. Every step of this process serves a greater purpose: supporting our customers – poultry producers worldwide – in feeding their communities with nutritious, sustainable poultry meat, playing our part in food security and safety for people around the globe,” said Diane Hartjes, Aviagen’s global director, export & logistics.
