Acmecs contract farming agreement

03-05-2007 | |

The members of the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong-Economic Strategy (Acmecs) Group have agreed to cooperate on contract farming, preventive measures against bird-flu, and infrastructure.

Contract farming
Contract farming initiatives, based on the earlier experiences of Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand Group, will focus on promoting those regional village crops where yields are low or cannot be grown.
Health
This is a key issue for the region’s economic prosperity. With initial funding of Bhat 100 million (€2.2 million), this issue will focus on preventive measures against bird flu to eliminate the reliance on vaccines.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure, to be treated in a wider context, will tap India’s and China’s potential, as well as the fast-growing economies of Singapore and Malaysia, to initiate a road development cooperation framework, including the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), Bangladesh-India-Myanmar-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Co-operation (Bimstec), and the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), as well as ASEAN.
