Added cost pressures this winter
With the winter setting in across the northern hemisphere, there are concerns that poultry producers will have to struggle under additional costs with extra heating necessary to look after poultry flocks.
Growers will have to cope with added expense to keep their birds warm, and ranchers have concerns about forage that has become tainted because of the freeze.
Extension poultry specialist for the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Susan Watkins, says that the poultry industry will be using more fuel to keep birds warm thereby increasing production costs. However, she warns that keeps cannot try to save costs by lowering heating as this will have a negative effect on bird health, weight and feed conversion.
