Alltech has announced that Dr David Byrne will be the recipient of the 2009 Medal of Excellence to be presented at Alltech’s 25th International Animal Health and Nutrition Symposium taking place 17-20 May in Lexington, Kentucky, US.

Dr Byrne will be honoured for his commitment to food safety, including his revolutionary reform of the EU’s safety systems during his tenure as European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, says Alltech.

“Dr Byrne pioneered the structures of traceability, rapid response and recall within the EU. These structures are now used worldwide and are recognised as the global blueprint for feed and food safety systems. He revolutionised feed and food safety and restored consumer confidence in the industry,” said Dr Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech.

Dr Byrne currently serves as non-executive director of Alltech. As part of this role, Dr Byrne is a member of Alltech’s Risk Overview Committee (ROC) where he aims to ensure that the company has effective and efficient risk management structures in place.

As European Commissioner, Dr. Byrne established a three pillar strategy comprising: a full range of Food and Safety Laws; the setting up of a new independent European Food Safety Authority (EFSA); and the introduction of an effective control and enforcement mechanism.
