Sen Sovann, deputy director of the animal health department of the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture in Phnom Penh has reported the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in a chicken flock.
The chickens were found ill on April 6 and H5N1 was confirmed on April 12. Bird flu was not reported in Cambodia since September 2006.
The outbreak was reported in the Cham area in a flock of 1,086 birds of which suddenly 300 birds died. The rest of the flock has been destroyed.
The stamping out procedure was undertaken on 11 April 2007. Surveillance in the villages around the outbreak is ongoing.
