Black economic empowerment poultry farm opened

A R20-million (€2 million) black economic empowerment project in South Africa has seen the opening of a Loerie Hoogte poultry farm by Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Lulu Xingwana.

This project is a joint venture between Rocklands Poultry (a subsidiary of Sovereign Food Investments) and Kamnandi Trading in Loerie.
“This is a phenomenal project. It demonstrates how much private-public partnerships can achieve when we all share the same strategic vision,” said Xingwana.
The operation consists of six state-of-the-art 1,800m² chicken houses capable of producing about 54,000 chickens a month each when operating at full capacity.
A sum of R6-million (€600,000) was donated by Rocklands Poultry for the project. The department of agriculture funded the infrastructure providing R5-million (€500,000). A further R9-million (€900,000) came from commercial banks.
