Blood samples to be taken at UK poultry show

Blood samples are to be taken of visitors at this year’s Pig and Poultry Fair as part of an investigation in to emerging zoonoses in animal workers.

The purpose of the study, by Public Health England, is to establish a collection of anonymous blood samples donated by people working with animals in England. These samples will be used to look for evidence of exposure to emerging infections.

This will allow them to understand these infections better and to produce public health advice. This collection of blood samples will be called the Serum Archive for Emerging Zoonoses (SAfEZ).

At the Fair, to be held May 13-14, visitors can participate by donating a small amount of blood (10 ml) and filling in a short questionnaire.
