Effective disinfectant for Salmonella control

Livestock disinfectant DuPont™ Virkon® S has recently been re-evaluated at Wageningen University in the Netherlands to specifically address the stringent EU legislation on Salmonella control for poultry.

“Enhanced Salmonella biosecurity is an area that most producers are giving great thought to, but this needs to be worked at and tailored to specific farms, with constant review. Producers need to think about how Salmonella can get onto farm and then think of policies to try and prevent this,” says Poultry Technical Director at DuPont, Tony Pearson.

The latest EN 1656 Salmonella studies confirmed that Virkon® S achieved dilution rates of 1:100 and 1:200 against all of the 5 most prevalent human health-related strains of Salmonella – S. enteritidis, S. typhimurium, S. virchow, S. infantis and S. hadar, reports DuPont.

Virkon® S is designed for use in all Salmonella prevention and decontamination procedures in the poultry house including the disinfection of surfaces, equipment, foot dips and vehicle wheel dips and cold fogging at a 1:100 dilution rate.

For livestock transport, water systems and aerial disinfection in the presence of birds at a 1:200 dilution, Virkon® S remains effective in the presence of organic challenge. Also, highly effective at low temperatures and across the pH spectrum, Virkon® S requires only a brief contact time of 30 seconds which makes it s for poultry house footdips.
