First Poultry Farmers Day held in Pakistan

Pakistan’s first “Poultry Farmers Day” took place on 21st December at the Department of Poultry Husbandry, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Pakistan.

Poultry Farmers, poultry experts, poultry scientists, teachers and under and post graduate students were in attendance. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Amir Bux Kalhoro, the Dean Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam and closed by Dr. Rahim Bux Mirbehar, Pro Vice Chancellor, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam. The event was focused on current problems of poultry production and health.

Research and awareness oriented problems were noted among farmers. Prof.Dr.Amir Bukhsh Kalhoro, Prof. Dr. M.Ismail Rind, Dr. Azizullah Memon, Dr, M. Aslam Jalai, and Dr. Abidi were the key speakers, followed by a question-answer session.

Problems highlighted included the unstable/unorganised poultry marketing system, the lack of research in poultry, high mortality and morbidity, the lack of diagnostic laboratories, the lack of Government interest in solving farmers’ problems, high costs of chicks, feed, vaccines and medicines and low returns.
