The Columbian poultry sector could be in danger now a Free Trade Agreement will be put in place. This FTA is sponsored by the USA and a danger to Columbian poultry farmers, said President of the Colombian Poultry Farmers National Federation (FENAVI) Jorge Enrique Bedoya.

Bedoya stated Saturday that once that commercial treaty comes into effect, Colombia would import a tonne of seasoned chicken some $660 cheaper than national production. This would turn the sector upside down within 24 months.

The FTA would destroy more than 60% of the national poultry industry, Bedoya forecasted. He called on the Colombian government to maintain the prohibition on imports of seasoned chicken, which was issued in 1994, in order to save the national industry.
