The Sri Lankan government is planning to support local egg production in an effort to increase the nutritional level of the Sri Lankan people.
The Ministry of Economic Development will launch a special program under the Divi Neguma national agriculture programme to provide assistance to increase egg production in the country.
In the plans, the Ministry will distribute 900,000 chicks among 90,000 households across the country. Under the first stage of the program, 600,000 chicks will be distributed to 60,000 households.
The program aims to increase the nutritional level of people in the villages by encouraging the households to produce sufficient eggs, a convenient source of protein and nutrition, for the family.
Under the programme, the Ministry of Economic Development will provide the required money to obtain the chicks and build the facilities to house them. The Ministry expects the households to produce sufficient eggs for the family and sell the surplus to earn extra income.
