IPC names Peter Bradnock as Policy Affairs Consultant

Peter Bradnock, former chief executive of the British Poultry Council (BPC), has been selected to be policy affairs consultant for the International Poultry Council (IPC).

Bradnock was chosen from among several candidates to assume the new part-time position at the IPC. He retired in 2013 after more than 20 years of service with the BPC.

As the IPC’s policy affairs consultant, Bradnock will work with international organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Codex Alimentarius Commission on issues that concern the global poultry industry.

At its recent meeting in Geneva, the IPC Executive Committee recommended hiring a consultant to monitor policy issues pertaining to poultry. Members of the organisation unanimously approved the committee’s recommendation.

“The OIE, the FAO, WHO, and Codex establish policies, standards and guidelines that affect our industry on a global scale,” said IPC President Jim Sumner of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council. “As the only global organisation representing the interests of poultry organisations in the major poultry-producing countries, the IPC believes that having a knowledgeable policy person to interact with these international groups on important poultry issues is essential.”

A native of New Zealand who also holds British citizenship, Bradnock represented the UK poultry industry in the IPC since 2007, and was elected to the organisation’s Executive Committee in 2012.

Before joining the BPC in 1991, Bradnock held numerous private sector and government positions in the UK and in New Zealand, including serving as a consultant to the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board and economic counselor for the New Zealand High Commission in London. He also was commercial counselor in Rome for the New Zealand Embassy.

Bradnock also was head of finance at the New Zealand Department of Trade and Industry in Wellington and served in Brussels for four years as first secretary (economic) for the New Zealand Mission to the European Communities.

A graduate of Victoria University of Wellington with a degree in commerce and administration majoring in economics and political science, Bradnock received the BPC Poultry Person of the Year Award in 2012 and the Goodchild Trophy for service to the UK turkey industry in 1995.
