Kenya returns suspect poultry to Egypt

07-12-2006 | |

The Kenyan Government has sent two containers carrying imported poultry products from Egypt back to the country, because of suspicions that the shipment may be contaminated with the bird flu virus.

Government officials who met at the Mombasa port police headquarters, where the containers were held, reached the decision to return the stock.
Deputy port police officer, Mr Ali Gitonga said officials from the Ministry of Health, Kenya Revenue Authority and the police had all agreed that the containers should not be opened lest they expose Kenyans to the bird-flu virus.
Egypt is among the countries in Africa where cases of avian influenza have been reported recently. At the end of October, the country reported its seventh human casualty from the disease.
The World Health Organisation reports that there have been 258 cases of bird flu in humans, with 15 of these occurring in Egypt.
