Mexican meat exports to US will resume

It is expected that meat and processed poultry shipments to the US will resume this week. The expected resumption comes according to the president of a major Mexican meat producers association.

Export permits
Eugenio Salinas, Meat Council President, said the Mexican government has told the council it could begin issuing export permits as of this week.

Last week, Mexico voluntarily suspended shipments of meat and processed poultry to the US after US officials discovered safety problems at several Mexican meat plants.
“It was a voluntary and precautionary suspension,” said Salinas.

According to US Department of Agriculture, inspectors from the US found systemic problems with sanitation controls and record keeping during an annual audit that took place in Mexico between 24 June – 31 June.

Inspector checks
Salinas has stated that US inspectors are currently in Mexico to check whether the problems have been sorted out. Mexico produces 1.6 million tonnes of meat per year – mostly for national consumption. It exports approximately 20,000 tonnes to the US yearly.
