New 15-minute bacteria test

21-03-2007 | |

A quick and inexpensive test for bacterial contamination has been developed by scientists working for the US Food and Drug Administration.

This test will make it possible to detect salmonella and listeria in food and to later find antibiotic-resistant pathogens in hospitals. This test, which gives the results in 15 minutes compared to the current tests that take 2-3 days, will be commercialised in collaboration with the industry.
The Rapid-B test will be marketed by a private technology development company Litmus, coming from the FDA’s National Centre for Toxicological Research in Arkansas, and is being evaluated by Simmons Foods, a US poultry processing company.
