30-11-2006 | |

Latvia has reported the discovery of Newcastle Disease, never before found in the country, in the cities of Valmiera, Blome and Strenci.

According to Dr Vinets Veldre, Chief Veterinary Officer of the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, who reported the outbreak, nine wild pigeons died from Newcastle disease recently.
The results were confirmed by a UK reference laboratory of the World Animal Health Organisation. The birds were originally being tested within the framework of a passive avian influenza surveillance programme.
The source of the disease is unknown as yet, and no further evidence of the disease has been discovered in recent days. There have been no reports of the disease from poultry establishments, including backyard farms.
