NZ: Farmers up in arms over meat prices

23-10-2008 | |

Organisation Federated Farmers is flustered by the major jump in grocery bills.

The price of chicken has increased by almost 6%, beef by almost 7%, and pork just below 12%. These increases bring the rise in the cost of food in the past year to 10.8%.

Don Nicolson, Federated Farmers president, has said that for the past year New Zealand farmers have had their lowest prices in living memory. He added that while a lot of work goes into getting meat ready for consumption, it is hard to understand why it has become so expensive.
