Poultry Olympics started in Brazil

More than two thousand poultry specialists from all over the world were present during the opening of the 24th World Poultry Congress in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Bob Pym president of the World Poultry Science Association was happy to see so many renowned specialists as well as governmental representatives, including Brazil’s minister of Agriculture and the governor of the State of Bahia.

He noted that the poultry industry has a strong role to play in feeding the world and developing the industry in poor countries. It has to be done in a sustainable way, he said. For some time now the congress has been held the same year as the Olympic Games and to a certain extent can be considered the poultry Olympics. For Brazil this is especially the case since it is the first of three major global events to be held in Brazil: 2012 this WPC, 2014 World Cup Football and in 2016 the Olympic Games.

Prof. Edir da Silva, chairman of the organizing committee, was pleased with the attendance and encouraged the poultry researchers present to support a sustainable development of the industry, which provides food for the world and jobs for many people.
