UK Enviro Secretary warns of misleading labels

09-02-2009 | |

Hilary Benn, Environment secretary has stated that misleading meat and poultry labels are threatening Britain’s food security.

Reports state that according to Benn, by labelling imported meat and poultry, which is processed in Britain as ‘produced in the UK’, supermarkets are undermining the government’s efforts to encourage people to buy more British food.

“You may turn it [a product] over and discover that actually it came from Denmark,” he said. “So, we are pressing strongly in Europe…because consumers are not getting clear information.”

Benn added that the government is currently lobbying to get European rules on meat and labelling reviewed and changed.
