UK officially avian influenza-free

It was announced on 20 November that the UK is officially free of avian influenza, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) rules.

The OIE rules state that there needs to be a 3-month interval between the final cleansing and disinfection of premises involved in an AI outbreak and official recognition of freedom from the disease.

It is reported that the UK has not been able to export poultry and poultry products to the majority of its traditional third country markets for the past 12 months as a result of the bird flu outbreaks in 2007 and 2008.

Now that the UKis officially AI-free, it will try to regain access to these markets.
