According to the 2007 US Cenus of Economic Data report, poultry capital expenditure for machinery per slaughter/processing plant was more than three times as high as red meat.
Total US capital expenditures for machinery for red meat slaughtering and processing was US$1.01 bln, says the report.
The US government reported the total was split around 50/50 between slaughtering and processing. It also reported there were almost 3,000 plants in total, so the average capital expenditure for machinery per plant was US$337,000.
However, poultry capital expenditure for machinery per plant was more than three times as high as red meat.
According to the Economic Data report, the average poultry capital expenditure for machinery per plant was US$1.6 mln. The total for poultry slaughtering and processing was US$889 mln.
