US: Ready-to-cook poultry weight up

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reports that ready-to-cook poultry weight totalled 3.83 bln pounds in July, which is up 6% from July 2007.

The June figures show that ready-to-cook poultry weight reached 3.66 bln pounds, which is an increase of 2% from June 2007.
Total live weight
Preliminary total live weight of poultry inspected in July reached 5.13 bln pounds. This is a 5% increase from 2007 July figures of 4.87 bii pounds.
Slaughter weight
Average weight of young chickens slaughtered in July averaged 5.54 pounds per bird, which is up 1% from the 2007 July figures. Meanwhile, live mature chicken weight averaged 5.90 pounds per bird, down 5% from last year’s figure.
Turkeys
Turkeys slaughtered during July averaged 28.4 pounds per bird. This is an increase of 1% from July 2007.
