USDA asked for funds to help poultry industry

10-04-2009 | |

US Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., is urging the US Agriculture Secretary to provide government funds to keep poultry farmers afloat, reports ArkansasBuiness.com.

Ross and eight other members of Congress recently wrote the agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack, urging him to provide funds from the USDA Rural Development funds.

The USDA received the funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and would provide short-term, low-interest loans and other forms of financial assistance. The act was passed earlier this year to “stimulate” the economy. The USDA received $28 bln of the $787 bln total, according to the USDA.

This assistance would help poultry growers weather the storm during the current economic situation,” said Ross.
