USDA asked to ban processed meats

14-10-2008 | |

Reports state that the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and its subsidiary group, The Cancer Project, filed a petition asking USDA to ban processed meats from the menus of school cafeterias. The petition was filed late last week.

Processed meat causes cancer
The organisation, consisting of approx. 7,000 doctors who promote vegetarian diets and oppose animal research, claims that processed meats causes cancer. Therefore, it wants the processed meats eliminated from the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. The meat industry and many doctors disagree with that stance.
Before the filing of the petition, the group aired TV commercials in cities which USDA visited as part of a nationwide series of listening sessions aimed at gathering comments on possible reforms to the Child Nutrition Act.
