Egg production in the US totaled 7.37 bln during September 2009, up slightly from last year’s figures, reports Farms.com.
Production included 6.34 bln table eggs, and 1.03 bln hatching eggs, of which 961 mln were broiler-type and 69 mln were egg-type. The total number of layers during September 2009 averaged 334 mln, down slightly from 2008. September egg production per 100 layers was 2,209 eggs, up 1% from September 2008.
All layers in the US on October 1, 2009 totaled 335 mln, up slightly from 2008. The 335 mln layers consisted of 279 mln layers producing table or market type eggs, 52.4 mln layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 2.88 mln layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on October 1, 2009, averaged 73.4 eggs per 100 layers, unchanged from October 1, 2008.
Egg-type chicks
Egg-type chicks hatched during September 2009 totaled 40 mln, up 8% from September 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 36.2 mln on October 1, 2009, down slightly from a year ago.
Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 212,000 during September 2009, up 1% from September 2008.
Broiler-type chicks
Broiler-type chicks hatched during September 2009 totaled 739 mln, down 2% from September 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 586 mln on October 1, 2009, down 3% from a year earlier.
Leading breeders placed 6.72 mln broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during September 2009, down 2% from September 2008.
