Angola wants to reduce poultry and egg imports

06-06-2012 | | |

Angola imports US$500 million worth of chicken and eggs, pork, and beef: too much in Minister of Agriculture Afonso Pedro Canga’s view. The minister presented his views at a business fair in Cubal, Angola.

Speaking at an entrepreneurs fair in Cubal, Angola, the minister announced the government’s intention of reducing imports to Angola. Imports are estimated to be worth US$500 million per year.

While Angola lacks large investments in infrastructure, technicians, technology and other services, the Angolan government has started programmes to rehabilitate production facilities, train veterinary researchers, agricultural and fishing programmes, and the construction of roads for transport and distribution of goods.

Pedro Canga stressed that the government’s efforts in this direction were stressed at ensuring self-sufficiency among Angola’s farmers, and raising enough produce to make Angola an export-driven economy.
