ASEAN countries plan to establish halal poultry company
Four ASEAN countries, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and the Philippines, are planning to jointly form a halal poultry export company to boost exports to the Middles East, according to an Indonesia official.
Of the ASEAN nations, Brunei is the only one currently licensed to export halal chicken to the Middle East.
Deputy for Studies on Resources of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises in Indonesia, I Wayan Suwarja, said that the formation of the joint export company was on the agenda for the upcoming Eastern Asean Growth Area (EAGA) meeting.
The lack of a license to export halal poultry has posed a constraint to Indonesian poultry breeders to export their commodity to the Middle East, Wayan said, adding that a number of national poultry breeders hoped their products could penetrate the Middle Eastern region.
“The prospective joint halal poultry company is expected to overcome the problem,” he said.
According to Wayan, the plan to set up the joint company is still in the early stages, but the three other member countries have given positive response to the plan.
A representative of Brunei Darussalam, Sidap H Belaman, has also welcomed the plan.
He said license is given to breeders who meet the standards on cleanliness and the slaughtering process on the basis of Islamic tenets.
