Barbados bans chicken wing import until stocks clear

According to Barbados’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Erskine Griffith, no chicken wings will be imported until chicken stocks currently in cold storage are sold off.

The decision to impose the import ban was because there is currently 770,000 kg of chicken in cold storage due to the fall in demand for poultry.
Senator Erskine Griffith said that the poultry industry usually keeps between 100,000 and 200,000 kg of poultry meat in storage to supply the island for at least two weeks, in the case of an emergency.

However, within the last six months, the demand for poultry fell due to higher supplies of alternative sources of protein including fish and pork

“Distributors have been asked not to bring in anymore onto the island, temporarily, so as to allow the local industry to sell off the amount it has in storage, and then thereafter to regulate the industry in such a manner that they do not find themselves in that situation again,” said Griffith.
