Aviagen is deeply committed to the advancement of sustainability, and our Top 5 Corporate Commitments support the 5 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) prioritised by the International Poultry Council. They focus on eliminating hunger, promoting good health and well-being, supporting innovation, driving education, and protecting our planet for future generations.
Our commitment to sustainable development doesn’t end with our corporate breeding programme. Our colleagues around the world have made sustainability a major goal, because we care about our customers, the communities we serve, and our natural world. A shining example is our team in India, who has put sustainability front and centre when deciding the best use of their time and energy.
Plastic has been identified as the most hazardous pollution on earth. Unnecessary piling up of plastic waste in our earth’s environment is adversely affecting both wildlife and humans. Aviagen India has an initiative in place to reduce the use of one-use plastics in their facilities by replacing plastic shopping bags with cotton fabric bags, plastic water bottles with a reverse-osmosis water system or stainless-steel bottles, and one-use plastic garbage bags with burlap gunny sacks.
One Aviagen India employee, Kasiraj. is so passionate about sustainability that he has set aside an acre of company land to grow safe, wholesome and nutritious produce for his colleagues. His home-grown organic fruits and vegetables supplement more than 500 meals per day, fulfilling over 20% of Aviagen India’s food requirements. The goal of the staff at our India complex is to soon become completely self-sufficient in producing their own fruits and vegetables.
At Aviagen India, it’s not all about chickens. Kasiraj, who grows food for the facility’s canteen, also looks after the more than 7,000 coconut trees growing on the 300-acre Aviagen India farm complex. The coconut trees provide a beautiful, relaxing, tropical atmosphere, along with shade and cooling for the farm. And, they offer delicious coconuts and coconut milk for employees and the local community.
Aviagen India cares about its employees and the communities they serve. To protect the biosecurity of its chickens, Aviagen India is located in a geographically secluded area. However, that means no public transport is available for 4 km.
Realising that every second is precious when it comes to saving lives, Aviagen India started their own Advanced Life Support Ambulance for employees and the local community. In a medical emergency, the ambulance can pick up employees and speedily transport them to hospitals in Udumalpet or Coimbatore City. One of 5 Aviagen volunteers drive the ambulance, while a First Responder team of 4 Aviagen volunteers looks after the patient. The drivers and first responders underwent fundamental training in first-aid and medical equipment operation.
Aviagen is dedicated to continuous sustainability improvement, and we are now exploring solar energy options within our operations. Aviagen India represents one of many examples of the caring hearts of Aviagen people all over the world. We are passionate about the welfare of our birds, helping others in our global community, and sustaining the planet we all call home for today and tomorrow.
