Five Brazilian poultry companies have been authorised to export poultry meat to China, the Brazilian Poultry Farming Union (Ubabef) has announced.

The five companies are in addition to the 24 exporters already approved by the Chinese government.

The president of Ubabef, Francisco Turra, indicated in a statement that the association and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply and Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade had been negotiating over the last several months with Chinese authorities for the approval of the producers.

“It was hard work, since all technical parameters had to be met. It is a key achievement for our industry, showing the high competitive capacity of Brazil and that we are fully able to meet the demands of the international chicken market,” Turra said.

He also indicated that negotiations with the Chinese authorities would continue to enable more Brazilian poultry plants to import their product into the country.

China is the sixth-ranked importer of chicken meat from Brazil, accounting for 5% of total exports in 2013, when it acquired 190,300 tons worth US$440.7 million.

In the first two months of 2014 Brazilian producers exported 32,300 tons, with a revenue of US$72.5 million.
