Poultry industry officials have commented that the concept of branded eggs is slowly catching on in India, but shortages in supply have led to a price surge of 75% in the last two years.
Chairman of Keggfarms, based in Gurgaon, Vinod Kapoor, commented that there is great potential for branded eggs but that demand is too high to be satisfied by his farm.
In Delhi, for example, 35 lakh eggs are consumed on a daily basis against a price increase in 2007 to Rs 70 (US$1.77) per dozen compared to Rs 40 (US$1.01) in 2005.
Kapoor claims that his company’s branded eggs are different as they are organic and contain more proteins.
He has plans to divest the branded egg business from his other poultry activities such as manufacturing vaccines and producing chicks for rural households.
Chairman of the National Egg Coordination Committee (Northern Region), Harish Junega said that “there is a future in branded eggs, however, packaging costs are still too high to reduce retail prices at present”.
