Lagos farmers to be compensated for culled birds

Director, Livestock and Pest Control, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Junaid Maina, said that the Ministry of Finance had released more than N53 million (€331,793) to compensate farmers whose birds were culled during the bird flu saga.

He said that more than N107.6 million (€673,602) had been committed by government for the payment of compensation to affected farmers for more than 500,000 birds depopulated in the 14 affected states of the federation. He said since the ministry finished the payment of the first batch in August last year, it had taken longer than expected to pay the balance.

The director said that after the payment of the outstanding amount, the World Bank would take over subsequent payment of compensation to any affected farmer. The World Bank has provided €38,538,022 International Development Association (IDA) credit for the Avian Influenza Control and Human Preparedness and Response Project (AICHPRP).

Maina said that part of the World Bank major intervention was the direct payment of variable rates based on production cost incurred by poultry producers who were affected by the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) either through mortalities or depopulation. He added that it was an improvement on the previous direct payment of fixed rates which was an emergency measure.
