Nigeria’s Imo State government has pledged to revive a former multi-billion naira poultry establishment which was abandoned by successive administrations in the state.
Rochas Okorocha, a local Governor said that the state government has engaged the services of some foreign and local agricultural experts to bring Avutu Modern Poultry farm in Obowo, established by the late Governor Sam Mbakwe, back to business.
Frank Ibeziem, managing director of Crux Industries who toured the poultry house, said that although it had been abandoned for over a generation by past administrations and is dilapidated, decayed and has a ramshackle infrastructure, an arrangement had been concluded to breathe new life into the institution.
This, according to Ibezeim, entails feasibility studies, installation of a one million litre water tank, administrative and residential blocks and at least, two poultry beds which would stock above 30,000 birds. “Imo Poultry capacity is 2.5 million birds a year, 40 million eggs a year, 13,000 birds a year, processing plant with cold room, hatchery, feed mill, 45 poultry houses in nine plots,” Ibezeim said.
The developers have asked for the cooperation of the Avutu. In response, the royal fathers through Eze Abel Chukwuocha noted that the revival of the Avutu modern poultry had become a challenge to Imo State government but commended the government for taking the bull by the horns to bring it back to life. The monarchs therefore pledged their full support and co-operation of their communities towards the realisation of the revival mission.
