The hygiene of hatching eggs has a major influence on the results in the hatchery and on broiler performance. Bacterial contamination of hatching eggs decreases hatchability and causes bangers in the hatchery. If correct measures are taken, this is to be avoided.
In order to explain breeder and hatchery managers how to improve the quality of their hatching eggs, Vencomatic has defined 5 steps which will help obtaining perfect hatching eggs.
1. Hygienic nest flooring
At the point of oviposition, the hatching egg is still humid and is most vulnerable to bacterial contamination. As a result, contact with litter or dirty surfaces should be avoided.
2. Prevent birds from staying in the nest overnight
By closing the nest boxes at night, the birds are prevented from staying overnight in the nest box and littering the nest floor. The nests should be closed with a system that is gentle to the birds.
3. Controlled hatching egg storage
Eggs should roll away from the nest to the egg belt and out of the birds’ sight directly after ovi position. This prevents damage to the eggs by the birds and also provides ideal storage conditions for hatching eggs.
4. Prevent floor eggs
The nest should be the most attractive place in the house for hens to lay their eggs. Alternative nesting places should be prevented.
5. Gentle egg handling and packing
Hatching eggs are valuable and should be handled with care to prevent hairline cracks that reduce hatchability.
For each of the 5 steps, a video has been made for explanation. These video’s are broadcasted on Vencomatic’s website.
