Philippines aims to up egg consumption

Egg producers in the Philippines aim to increase per capita egg consumption in the country through a marketing campaign, reports Business World.

Per capita egg consumption in the country is currently at 94, which is much lower than in Thailand (145) and Malaysia (305) and even the US (257), according to the president of the National Federation of Egg Producers of the Philippines, Gregorio A. San Diego, Jr.

It has been reported that the popularity of eggs has been questionable due to the belief consumers have in its cholesterol content, as well as the comaplint that egg prices are high.

Funding

The Philippines Egg Board now plans to collect five to 10 centavos for every layer sold to local farmers to fund an egg promotions campaign. At 5 centavos per layer sold to farmers, the Egg Board expects to collect some 5.1 mln pesos (€77,000, US$108,000).

Population, egg consumption rising

Egg production, which accounted for 2.39% of total agriculture output, rose by 4.67% to 350,770 mt last year from 335,110 mt in 2007, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).
