Pilgrim’s Pride has reported plans to re-open its chicken processing plant in South Georgia by January 2011. The poultry processor will also re-open 2 other idled facilities, one by mid-2011 and the other by spring 2012.

The re-openings will boost Pilgrim’s Pride’s production by 10%, or approx. 3.5 mln birds a week.

“This plant will directly employ over 1,000 Georgians and support over 3,000 other jobs, including growers,” said Gov. Sonny Perdue.

Pilgrim’s CEO Don Jackson said that Pilgrim’s Pride and the industry have taken out significant production capacity over the past 2 years. “We fully believe that with the strengthening economy and improving fundamentals, consumer demand for chicken is increasing,” he added.
