Price control in Malaysia for Chinese New Year
Putrajaya, the third Federal Territory of Malaysia, plans price control on 17 goods in conjunction with the Hari Raya, Deepavali and Chinese New Year celebrations
15 types of goods are placed under the control scheme, including standard chicken, super chicken, local beef, imported buffalo meat, imported mutton with bones (sheep), imported mutton (sheep) without bones excluding thighs, eggs (grade A,B,C). Two new items included under the scheme for the Chinese New Year are White Pomfret and large white shrimps.
The price regulations will run for 53 days, compared to four months last year. Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohamed Shafie Apdal said the move to shorten the period was made following complaints from suppliers and traders who were affected by the control period.
He said the prices were fixed according to the national inflation movement at 3.8%. He warned traders not to raise the prices of goods indiscriminately. He advised consumers to be careful of the prices tagged on the goods to ensure they were not cheated.
