Report: Indonesian poultry industry looks promising in 2011

In the seminar of Indonesian poultry outlook 2011 in Jakarta, it was estimated that Indonesian poultry industry could grow around 6%, writes Arief Fachrudin for World Poultry.

Some obstacles such as Avian Influenza and climate change are always there, but the stakeholders believe that they have had some strategies to overcome it.

Poultry Feed
Indonesian poultry feed business could grow 6% in 2011. This estimation was stated by the Chairman of Indonesian Feedmills Association Mr. FX Sudirman.

Looking back to 2010, Sudirman said that climate change had given negative impacts to local corn production so that the production was decreasing. As a consequence, the total of corn imports was increasing. “That is why, to achieve the 6% growth in 2011, the impacts of climate change should be anticipated and the farmers should keep improving their farming management for efficiency,” he said.

Besides that, Sudirman also predicted that in 2011 the competition of poultry feed business could be harder than in 2010. He continued, the reason is that the total production capacity of all feed producers in Indonesia is around 14 million tonnes per year, but the total consumption of poultry feed in 2010 was around 9.7 million tonnes and around 10.3 million tonnes in 2011 if could grow 6%.

Poultry Breeding
The Chairman of Indonesian Poultry Breeder Association Mr. Krissantono estimated that in 2011 final stock day old chick (FS DOC) broiler production could grow 6.1% or around 1,300 million birds, while FS DOC layer production could grow 6.3% or around 85 million birds. He said the estimation was based on the opportunity that the population number of people in Indonesia is big, although the consumption of poultry products is low.

Krissantono mentioned, poultry meat consumption is 4.8 kg/capita/year and egg is 5 kg/capita/year. “It is an opportunity to increase the production of broiler and layer. The industry capacity, technology and field for farming are available. So, if we do both socialisation and education of the importance of consuming poultry products sustainably, the consumption of poultry products will increase,” he said.

Although in 2011 the business of poultry breeding looks promising, Krissantono added, Avian Influenza should be the priority of concern. He also hoped that the government policies support the business of poultry breeding to grow.
