TV chef to convince Tesco shareholders of chicken welfare

UK chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has sent Tesco £86,000 to put his concerns about chicken welfare to the retailer’s shareholders.

The TV chef bought a share in Tesco earlier in 2008, giving him the right to put a resolution at the company’s annual general meeting (AGM). However, he missed the deadline for submitting documents and was told that he had to meet the £86,888 cost of sending the papers to investors, the Press Association reported.
An online auction together with donations fetched more than the amount needed, and any extra money will be donated to Compassion in World Farming, and aimed at improving poultry welfare, said the chef.
Later this month, Fearnley-Whittingstall will call on fellow shareholders to vote on a resolution that would force Tesco to adopt RSPCA standards on chicken.
Tesco’s chicken is certified under the poultry industry’s Assured Chicken Production standard, but Fearnley-Whittingstall wants all retailers to meet the RSPCA’s Freedom Food scheme.
