Ukraine sends first poultry shipments to the EU

Ukraine has started exporting poultry to the European Union, deputy chairman of the State veterinary service Vitaly Bashynski told a press conference.

MHP, the country’s largest domestic poultry producer carried out its first deliveries of about 60 tonnes of poultry to France and 20 tonnes of poultry to the Netherlands. The second largest poultry producer in Ukraine Agromars is also preparing to initiate its first deliveries to Europe, which may take place already in the coming days.

Ukraine experts say the fodder, which is a major expenditure item in chicken meat production, is much cheaper in Ukraine. Therefore, the largest domestic producers – MHP and Agromars which is almost self-sufficient in feed production will not face real price competition in the European market.

In 2013, according to the industry experts’ forecasts, the volume of Ukrainian poultry meat exports will reach 120,000 tonnes, but with only 3,000-4,000 tonnes going to the EU market. However, already in 2014 the Ministry of Aquaculture and Food of Ukraine plans to boost this figure to 20,000 tonnes.
