UPDATE: Nigerian poultry farmers raise bird flu alarm

Chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu, of the Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria, Kano State branch, has expressed doubts over eradication of bird flu in the country.

Adamu said this yesterday inKano, at the end of a workshop on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza, organised for Nigerian journalists by the Voice of America. He said although he was not a prophet of doom, it appeared to him that the virus had “come to stay in Nigeria ,” unless concerted efforts were made to check it.

Adamu said the disease claimed more than 600,000 birds in the country when it broke out last year, saying it was likely to wreak more havoc unless something was done to stop it.

The association’s chairman said the virus resurfaced in some parts of the country, and warned that it could cause more economic and psychological trauma for poultry farmers.

No fewer than 30 journalists, drawn from Kano , Katsina, Bauchi, Sokoto, Kaduna and Zamfara states attended the two-day workshop. They were introduced to the nature, danger and spread of Avian influenza and ways to enlighten the public through routine reports.
