The
NFU’s turkey promotion website had more than 100,000 hits in two months, with 5,500 entries in a competition to win a family stay on a farm, and many visiting the website to download a ‘gobble, gobble’ ringtone for mobile phones.
The website carried information of more than 140 turkey producers.
NFU poultry board vice chairman Mike Bailey said: “This year has been a phenomenal success with a record number of hits for the Ted Turkey website and many extra orders generated as a result.
“A lot of farmers are telling me they sold out and demand has been very high.
“Behind all the fun and games on the website is a serious message – buying a local bird for Christmas ensures taste, quality and assurance is at a premium. It makes sense to support your local producer – it is the best way to reduce food miles and look after the environment.â€
