Website boosts UK turkey sales

A website developed by the UK National Farmer’s Union (NFU) succeeded in boosting demand and sales for turkey farmers in the UK this holiday season.

The NFU’s turkey promotion website had more than 100,000 hits in two months, with 5,500 entries in a competition to win a family stay on a farm, and many visiting the website to download a ‘gobble, gobble’ ringtone for mobile phones.
The website carried information of more than 140 turkey producers.
NFU poultry board vice chairman Mike Bailey said: “This year has been a phenomenal success with a record number of hits for the Ted Turkey website and many extra orders generated as a result.
“A lot of farmers are telling me they sold out and demand has been very high.
“Behind all the fun and games on the website is a serious message – buying a local bird for Christmas ensures taste, quality and assurance is at a premium. It makes sense to support your local producer – it is the best way to reduce food miles and look after the environment.”
