We’re keeping our finger on the pulse and bring you a summary of the latest business updates from the global poultry industry this July.

Novus hosts broiler breeder-focused event

Researchers at Novus shared their insights on broiler hatchability, gut health, and sustainability at the Poultry Science Association annual meeting in Kentucky in the US in July. Topics included the use of different sources of zinc and combinations of zinc with copper and manganese in broiler chickens, the effect of replacing inorganic Zn, Cu and Mn by chelated sources with Methionine-Hydroxy-Analogue on performance parameters and mineral excretion in broiler, the evaluation of trypsin inhibitor contents in different types of soybean meal from various world areas analyzed by near-infrared spectroscopy technology, and a review of mineral recommendations in broiler breeders.

Fishmeal replacement for pig and poultry diets from UFAC UK

In light of a shortage of fishmeal, but based on the essential features of fishmeal, Omegapro is a slow-release, sustainable product, designed to support health, vitality, growth and fertility in pigs and poultry. The product incorporates a blend of marine oils, amino acids, glycerine and minerals, processed on a base of soya and vegetable protein concentrates, to provide the equivalent benefits of fishmeal. As well as supplying high levels of highly digestible amino acids, alongside glucose and minerals, Omegapro also provides preformed omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, from marine sources.

Alveo Technologies demonstrates its molecular test to detect H5N1 variants

Alveo Technologies has announced that it has demonstrated in silico that its rapid, handheld molecular diagnostic for avian influenza can detect the H5N1 variant based on sequences published from recent human infections in Colorado, as well as those found in infected cattle. Alveo expects the Flockscreen LAMP Avian Influenza Molecular Test for poultry, the first diagnostic of its kind that can test both cloacal and oropharyngeal samples, and which the company developed with numerous partners, to begin shipping to Europe and the Middle East in the third quarter of 2024 once validation and verification activities have concluded with the relevant regulatory bodies. The company is now actively working to validate avian influenza diagnostics for both human and bovine use cases.

DSM-Firmenich presents results of mycotoxin survey

DSM-Firmenich has released the results of the World Mycotoxin Survey from January to June 2024. A total of 11,520 samples were collected and analysed from 77 countries worldwide. The results concluded that Fusarium mycotoxins, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone and fumonisins are most frequently found, with the highest regions of mycotoxins found in North and Central America, South Asia, South East Asia and China and Taiwan. The survey also includes details on the prevalence levels for each mycotoxin in each region, global and local risk levels for each mycotoxin, risk levels posed to each species, a comparison of prevalence levels from January-June 2023, and an overview on the occurrence of the most frequent mycotoxins, their masked and modified forms as well as emerging mycotoxins.

ADM announces traceable soybean meal and oil for European customers

With EU deforestation regulations coming into effect on 30 December, ADM has announced that it is offering verified, segregated, traceable soybean meal and oil to European customers. In March, ADM launched a fully traceable North American soybean program, re:source, which enrolled almost 5,300 farmers encompassing more than 4.6 million acres across 15 states for the 2024 season. The program utilises technology – such as the FBN Gradable digital platform – as well as ADM’s origination and transportation capabilities to verify, trace and segregate participating beans from farms to their final destination. The company will utilise the sustainability measurement platform TRACT to provide traceability solutions to its customers across the supply chain.
