If you thought the last week has been fairly hot, it will be nothing compared to the challenge laid down by egg company boss Daniel Fairburn, who plans to run two consecutive marathons across the scorching Saharan desert later this year.
Daniel, managing director of Lincolnshire-based LJ Fairburn, which supplies more than 17m eggs a week across the UK, is taking part in the gruelling Saharan Challenge 2018 in October to raise funds for livestock charity Farm Africa.
He hopes to raise at least 45,000 from the venture that will take him over 84km of sub-baked dunes and rugged mountain ranges, sleeping under the stars along the way.
Daniel will start in the shadows of Mount Kissane in Morocco, and follow the Draa Valley south. About 52 miles later, he will cross the finish line at sunning Nakhla Dunes, near Zagora on the edge of the imposing Sahara desert.
It is not the first time he has taken part in an arduous challenge. Four years ago he raised £35,000 after successfully climbing Kilimanjaro in six days.
“Farm Africa is a fantastic cause, helping people in need in a really positive way. As a father of four, I know that providing for your family and putting good food on the table is paramount and shouldn’t be a luxury,” he said.
Among some of the poultry related projects that Farm Africa has been involved in is a poultry rearing scheme in Tigray, Ethiopia, where 1,312 households categorised as the “poorest of the poor” rear poultry. Each household received 15 pullets (45 day old chicks) with many also getting a 25kg of supplementary feed.
