Hot summer halts bird growth
Fresh chicken wholesale prices at Smithfield have levelled off again after a bit of a rollercoaster in the spring and summer.
They are now at comparable levels to both the start of the year, and to this time a year ago. In early August there was a further upset when the price of small birds (under 1.5kg) dropped briefly, by up to 20p/ kg on the smallest weights, due to a surplus caused by the hot weather.
