Poland is the largest producer of poultry meat in Europe, exporting almost 50% of its production, valued at $?1.9 billion in 2017, primarily to neighbouring European countries. It’s no surprise then that Gdansk, Poland was chosen as the location for this year’s biennial European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (ESPN).

Here all of Europe’s leading specialists will gather to share their scientific and technical achievements in poultry nutrition. Andrzej Rutkowski, president of the Polish WPSA branch which is organising the event explains in the opening interview in this special, that the event offers a great opportunity for younger generations to learn and propel the industry forward in the future. Now more than ever, the need for knowledge and development in poultry nutrition is growing. With African swine fever disseminating Chinese pig herds and making waves into Europe, the demand for poultry meat is growing. This is pushing up prices of raw materials even higher, meaning efficient alternatives are being sought to maintain both the health and performance of birds. This special edition, in conjunction with the ESPN event, offers valuable insights into the role of feed additives, how to protect the birds’ immunity and the importance of feed management. Knowledge is clearly the driving force behind feeding healthy birds.
