Video: Risks of H5N1 bird flu in dairy, poultry, and people

H5N1 bird flu is detected in 46 dairy herds in the United States, those herds are spread throughout 9 states. There has also been a case of a person, who works with cattle, testing positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1).

Researchers are alarmed by this development, as the virus has never been detected in ruminants. Prof Dr Wim van der Poel, Research Leader ‘Emerging and Zoonotic Viruses’ and works for Wageningen University & Research (WUR), is monitoring the developments closely. Prof Dr van der Poel talks more about the risks of bird flu in cattle and the chance of a worldwide spread.
