Bill stops local govt from imposing stricter laws on poultry farms

02-06-2006 | |

A bill has this week become law preventing South Carolina’s (USA) local governments from imposing stricter rules on poultry farms.

About 12 counties in South Carolina have implemented rules that are stricter than those imposed by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) for items such as how close poultry operations can be to neighbouring homes.

However, the view of the General Assembly is that the DHEC should make all decisions on regulating the poultry farms.

SC governor, Mark Sanford, permitted the bill to be past into law without his signature. Sanford had until midnight Monday to veto the bill, sign it or let it become law without his signature.

On the Tuesday morning, Sanford sent a letter to the Legislature outlining his concerns. Saying he was conflicted about local governments having control and that he didn’t want them to duplicate the role of the DHEC
