Bird Flu outbreak in China

12-02-2009 | |

Chinese authorities have culled 13,000 birds in Xinjiang province following the first outbreak of H5N1 bird flu.

Just 5 days after announcing that none of the human cases of avian influenza in the country this year were linked to outbreaks among birds, China reports the discovery of H5N1 bird flu.

This is the first bird flu outbreak in China since December, said China’s Chief Veterinary Officer Yu Kangzhen, adding that 1,330 farmed birds were infected with avian flu and 519 died. Authorities vaccinated 350,000 birds in Xinjiang in an effort to stop the virus spreading.
